I have been involved in photography as an art for over thirty years. In high school, I was influenced by a photography teacher who instilled the purist principles of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. I developed advanced skills in visualizing the tonal range of a setting and capturing images with available light. In the darkroom, I experimented with a variety of chemical and temperature techniques for both film and print processing. Early recognition of my photographic talent came when one of my high school still life photographs won second place in a University of Florida photography contest. I've been hooked on photography ever since.

:: sam dobrow

At the University of Florida, Sam’s conservative and traditional perspective on photography as a visual medium was challenged by the thinking and works of Jerry Uelsmann, one of the early masters of photomontage, and by guest lecturers like Robert Heineken (UCLA). Sam recently updated his education in studio photography and digital image processing through classes at the Art Institute of Atlanta where his artistic style was influenced by photo book author Perry Dilbeck. Sam has also attended workshops and studied under renowned photographers David Alan Harvey (documentary), Elizabeth Opalenik (fine art), Ralph Lee Hopkins (natural history), and Rolando Gomez (glamour). Sam's photography emphasizes the beauty of planet earth and its inhabitants.

Sam has fully embraced the digital revolution in photography. Today, he shoots almost exclusively with digital cameras and masters his images (with Photoshop) in the digital darkroom. Sam develops custom color profiles for his digital workflow and proofs his images using the profiles for target devices of his customers.

Sam’s forte is creating a photographic story integrating landscapes with portraits and fine art photography to convey his message with imagery. Sam is equally comfortable shooting an environmental portrait or street scene with natural light as he is shooting fashion and beauty with studio or location lighting. His versatility and comfort with a wide range of photographic subjects allows him to build a photographic story with variety and visual interest. The defining element of Sam’s style is his focus on beauty and joy of the human condition. His images and photo stories create a sense of place – a sense of being in a comfortable place – a place that the reader is drawn into and consumed by. Even Sam's surreal images create worlds of beauty and intrigue.

Sam Dobrow was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida. He currently lives in Milton, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta with his wife, Janice, and two daughters, Shannon and Jordan.

:: equipment

I am a firm believer in high quality camera equipment, especially lenses. In high school I shot a still life with a Hasselblad camera that eventually won second place in the University of Florida photography contest. That image and the award is a constant reminder that there is no substitute excellent glass. I am a fan of Canon's L lenses and mostly shoot (raw) with a 10MP Canon Digital Rebel XTi which yields high resolution images virtually without any visible grain at print sizes up to 16x20. I have experience with the 4x5 view camera and can shoot film in 35mm, 120mm and sheet film when the situation requires large images. I have a dual processor workstation with two color calibrated monitors to digitally process my images through Photoshop with a color managed workflow. My monitors and printers are color calibrated with professional calibration equipment from Colorvision. I use a variety of different papers based on the application all of which have color profiles developed for my Canon iPF5000 color printer. My fine art prints are printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag papers.
